Our Arbroath Smokies are a British classic! Our award-winning suppliers, Alex Spink & Sons, have been producing in Arbroath since 1977, specialising in traditionally making smokies over an oak-wood fire.

These are small whole haddocks (heads off and cleaned, but otherwise left on the bone) that have been hot-smoked – in other words, smoked and cooked simultaneously. It is very different from any other smoked haddock. You can eat them cold, but we prefer them warmed up. They’re delicious and have EU-issued Protected Geographical Indication, putting them in the same class as champagne.

Haddock (Melangrammus aeglefinus) (FISH), Salt.

Arbroath Smokies with Butter and Lemon

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Smokies:
    • If the Smokies are whole, carefully remove the skin and bones. The flesh should come away quickly.
    • Break the fish into large, bite-sized chunks.
  2. Warm the Smokies:
    • Place the Smokie pieces in a shallow dish or on a safe plate for the oven or microwave.
    • Dot the fish with the butter.
  3. Heat the Fish:
    • In the Microwave: Cover the dish with a microwave-safe cover or plastic wrap. Heat on medium power for 1-2 minutes until warmed through.
    • In the Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C. Cover the dish with foil and warm the fish in the oven for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Serve:
    • Once warmed, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the Smokies.
    • Season with freshly ground black pepper and garnish with chopped parsley or chives if desired.
    • Serve with crusty bread or boiled potatoes to soak up the buttery juices.
